Abstract

La Conferencia general de la UNESCO reunida en París en 1955 encargó a la Secretaría General de la organización el estudiar la posibilidad de la creación de centros regionales para el desarrollo del periodismo. El 15 de octubre de 1957 se crea para Europa y Africa el primer centro, plenamente autónomo y adscrito a la universidad de Estrasburgo. Este acontecimiento suscita en la Universidad Central de Quito el deseo de lograr una centro similar. El Gobierno del Ecuador acoge con simpatía la iniciativa y luego de una serie de negociaciones, mediante un acuerdo de cooperación con la UNESCO y la Universidad Central, se funda CIESPAL el 8 de octubre de 1959, como un "Centro Internacional de Estudios Superiores de Periodismo para América Latina""."
