Abstract

El 5 de enero de 1792 circuló en Quito el primer periódico, obra de un único redactor, que era, a la vez, director y hasta distribuidor: el Dr. Francisco Eugenio Javier de Santa Cruz y Espejo. Ello lo convierte en el fundador del periodismo ecuatoriano, y así lo hemos recordado los del oficio al cumplirse más de doscientos años de aquella empres y de su aciaga muerte en prisión, en 1795.
